Nationalism as social anesthesia
Nationalism operates as a social control mechanism designed to manipulate the masses. What is often disguised as legitimate love for the country is, in reality, a tool of political engineering. When national identity is transformed into an unquestionable loyalty, the domes of power achieve their greatest victory: canceling the critical thinking of citizens to replace it with blind obedience.
Under this logic, it is alarmingly easy to justify war conflicts, feed the rejection of other peoples and divert attention from the real abuses of those who exercise power.
The factory of the common enemy
The border between the feeling of belonging and manipulation is thin, but deliberate. Nationalism is designed to exploit the psychology of "us against them". It reduces the complexity of the world to a crude dichotomy where one's own group monopolizes all the virtues, while other groups are dehumanized, blamed and turned into a constant threat.
This ideology needs, in a pathological way, to build an enemy. Without a rival to blame, the group's identity crumbles, exposing the shortcomings of its own system.
The collective ego versus humanity
Far from building a stronger society, this identity bias fosters a false sense of superiority. It functions as a refuge for the individual ego: it allows people to appropriate the historical or cultural achievements of an entire nation as if they were their own merits. It is the pride of the inherited, not of the worked; a mechanism that only serves to inflate the ego and fragment coexistence. True political, social and intellectual maturity will only come when submission to rags and borders is dismantled. The day we stop rigidly identifying ourselves with a flag and begin to recognize ourselves as part of the same humanity, we will have finally understood the true meaning of social evolution.
